  1. Teaching creatively and teaching for creativity: distinctions and relationships.Bob Jeffrey * & Anna Craft - 2004 - Educational Studies 30 (1):77-87.
The distinction and relationship between teaching creatively and teaching for creativity identified in the report from the National Advisory Committee on Creative and Cultural Education (NACCCE, 1999), is examined by focusing on empirical research from an early years school, known for its creative approach. The examination uses four characteristics of creativity and pedagogy identified by Peter Woods (1990): relevance, ownership, control and innovation, to show the interdependence of the NACCCE distinctions. We conclude that although the NACCCE distinction between teaching creatively (...)

An Ethics for Today: Finding Common Ground Between Philosophy and Religion.Bob Mesle - 2011 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 32 (3):285-289.
The most important thing to know about this book is that it is mostly not by Rorty. Twenty pages of this small book were transcribed from an audio recording of a public lecture by Rorty including portions of his discussion with the audience, in Turin, Spain, in 2005. A Spanish translation appeared in 2008, followed by this English version in 2011. Jeffrey W. Robbins wrote a foreword, “Richard Rorty: A Philosophical Guide to Talking About Religion,” (vii–xxii). The introduction at (...)

Self-reliance without self-satisfaction: Emerson, Thoreau, Dylan and the problem of inaction.Jeffrey Edward Green - 2021 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 47 (2):196-224.
The idea of self-reliance is important not only because it is often taken to be definitive of the ethics of democratic individualism, but because its greatest theorists have been uncommonly forthright about a problem that, though familiar to ordinary civic experience, frequently gets ignored: that self-reliant individuality is a basis for not fully supporting otherwise endorsed social justice causes. This article turns to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Bob Dylan who are unusual for so honestly reflecting upon this (...)

The prescience and paradox of Erich Fromm: A note on the performative contradictions of critical theory.Jeffrey C. Alexander - 2021 - Thesis Eleven 165 (1):3-9.
As social theorists seek to understand the contemporary challenges of radical populism, we would do well to reconsider the febrile insights of the psychoanalytic social theorist Erich Fromm. It was Fromm who, at the beginning of the 1930s, conceptualized the emotional and sociological roots of a new ‘authoritarian character’ who was meek in the face of great power above and ruthless to the powerless below. It was Fromm, in the 1950s, who argued that societies, not only individuals, could be sick. (...)

    Bases for Structures and Theories I.Jeffrey Ketland - 2020 - Logica Universalis 14 (3):357-381.
Sometimes structures or theories are formulated with different sets of primitives and yet are definitionally equivalent. In a sense, the transformations between such equivalent formulations are rather like basis transformations in linear algebra or co-ordinate transformations in geometry. Here an analogous idea is investigated. Let a relational signature \ be given. For a set \ of \-formulas, we introduce a corresponding set \ of new relation symbols and a set of explicit definitions of the \ in terms of the \. (...)

Ethically Informed Pragmatic Conditions for Organ Donation after Cardiocirculatory Death: Could They Assist in Policy Development?Jeffrey Kirby - 2013 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 24 (4):373-380.
The modern practice of organ donation after cardiocirculatory death (DCD) emerged in the 1990s as a response to the alarmingly wide gap between the number of transplantable organs available through organ donation after neurological death and the urgent organ transplantation needs of persons in end-organ failure. Various important ethical dimensions of DCD have been considered and debated by prominent organ donation/transplantation theorists and clinicians. In this article, consideration of some of these ethical elements provides a foundation for a proposed set of (...)

Despite anxieties about the growing power of neo-liberalism, the crisis of the EU and the upsurge of right-wing political movements, it is important to recognize that utopian movements on the left have also in recent years been symbolically revitalized and organizationally sustained. This article analyses three recent social upheavals as utopian civil society movements, placing the 2008 US presidential campaign of Barack Obama, the Egyptian uprising in Tahrir Square and the Occupy Movement in the USA inside the narrative arc that (...)

Concept Mapping: An Innovative Approach to Clinical Case Analysis in an Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum in Social Sciences, Humanities, Ethics, and Professionalism.Jeffrey T. Berger, Dana Ribeiro Miller & Melissa Mooney - forthcoming - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics:1-7.
Although ethics is increasingly integrated in the curriculum of U.S. medical schools, it remains not well integrated with system issues, and social and structural contexts of illness. Moreover, ethical analysis is not often taught as a clinical skill. To address these issues, an outcomes driven course in Social Sciences, Humanities, Ethics and Professionalism (SHEP) was created. Within the course, a web-based concept mapping device, SHEP Case Analysis Tool (SCAT), was created which schematizes the structure and flow of clinical cases from (...)

On seeking the mythical fountain of consciousness.Jeffrey Foss - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (4):682-682.
Because consciousness has an organizational, or functional, center, Gray supposes that there must be a corresponding physical center in the brain. He proposes further that since this center generates consciousness, ablating it would eliminate consciousness, while leaving behavior intact. But the center of consciousness is simply the product of the functional linkages among sensory input, memory, inner speech, and so on, and behavior.

    Living Like There's No Tomorrow.Jeffrey P. Fry - 2009 - Philosophy in the Contemporary World 16 (1):79-88.
This paper explores whether resolving to "live like there's no tomorrow" would be conducive to living life to the fullest. While there is much to commend a life lived with a sense of urgency, I conclude that living like there's no tomorrow, in the final analysis, is neither advisable, nor realizable. In its place I suggest a life lived in mindfulness of the transitory and uncertain nature of our lives.
